Concurso gótico. Tale 14. The Shadow in the Alley


The rain hit hard the windows as Marcos ran down the dark alley. He heard a noise behind him, and his heart started beating fast. He looked back but he saw no one, only shadows moving between the trash cans.

Suddenly, something fell to the ground: a shiny metal object under the streetlight. Marcos picked it up and felt a chill. It was an old key.

He felt as it someone was watching him. His steps were fast, but his fear grew faster. He heard a whisper: “You shouldn’t be here…” He ran toward the alley’s exit, but the path was blocked by a dark figure. The figure moved slowly while Marcos searched for something to defend himself. His hand touched a metal bar lying on the ground. He was breathing hard; every second felt like forever.

A black cat ran across, distracting the figure for a moment. Marcos took the chance and turned, running toward an open door at the end of the alley.

He entered and closed the door, feeling relieved... for a moment... Because outside, the shadow was still there, waiting...
